Slow Cosmetics: Back to Basics for Sustainable Beauty

Slow Cosmetics offers a radically different approach to beauty and skincare. Instead of being overwhelmed by a multitude of products and plastic packaging, Slow Cosmetics encourages us to get back to basics, favoring natural, sustainable, and environmentally friendly products. In this article, I'll explain what Slow Cosmetics means, why I joined it, and how you too can adopt it in your own beauty routine.

What is Slow Cosmetics?

Slow Cosmetics is a movement that began in 2012 by Julien Kaibeck, a Belgian aromatherapist and cosmetologist. It promotes a more thoughtful and conscious approach to beauty, encouraging consumers to choose natural, simple, and environmentally friendly cosmetic products. The term "slow" refers to the slow philosophy, which aims to slow down the hectic pace of modern life and adopt a more thoughtful approach to all aspects of our lives.

The key principles of Slow Cosmetics:

  1. Simplicity : Use fewer, but better quality, products to avoid overloading the skin and reduce waste.

  2. Naturalness : Opt for cosmetic products made from natural and organic ingredients, free from harmful substances.

  3. Sustainability : Promoting environmentally friendly brands and products, with planet-friendly ingredients and reduced, recyclable or reusable packaging.

  4. Self-reliance : Encouraging consumers to learn how to decipher product labels and make certain beauty products themselves.

Why did I join?

  1. Environmental awareness : Concerned about the future of my children and future grandchildren, I am increasingly aware of environmental issues. I am looking for ways to reduce my carbon footprint, and Slow Cosmetics offers a solution by promoting environmentally friendly products.

  2. Skin Health : The presence of toxic chemicals in conventional beauty products has completely destroyed my trust in the industry. Slow Cosmetics offers an alternative that prioritizes natural and safe ingredients.

  3. Reaction to conventional products : I started using these facial products in my mid-twenties. I had very good skin at the time but was advised several times that it was better to start moisturizing my skin. Being concerned about my appearance, I started using creams as suggested. That's when the problems quietly, insidiously set in, so I didn't make the connection with my change in routine; namely the application of cosmetic products. Acne spots, redness, patches, dermatitis, ''name it'', I had it! Caught in a spinning wheel, I went from one product to another, from one company to another, from $$ to $$$, trying to regain the beautiful skin I had but without success.

  4. Long-term savings : Although Slow Cosmétique products may seem more expensive to purchase, the quality is so exceptional that you save on quantity.

How to adopt Slow Cosmetics in your beauty routine?

Adopting Slow Cosmetics into your beauty routine is easier than you think. Here are a few steps to get started:

  1. Take inventory of your products : Start by examining the products you currently use, read the labels, and eliminate those that contain harmful ingredients. For help, refer to my article Hidden Danger: The Toxic Ingredients Lurking in Your Cosmetics.

  2. Simplify your routine : Reduce the number of products you use daily. Choose quality products that contain organic or organically grown ingredients. Sometimes, less is more!

  3. Choose Slow Cosmétique products : Look for brands and products with the Slow Cosmétique label, which respect the principles of naturalness and ecology. https://www.slow-cosmetique.org/la-mention-slow-cosmetique/les-marques-laureates/

  4. Make your own products : If you're feeling creative, try making your own beauty products, such as face masks, scrubs, body butters, etc. Several recipe books are available in bookstores.

Slow Cosmetics is much more than a passing trend. It's a movement that encourages healthy, eco-friendly, sensible, and intelligent cosmetics. By adopting Slow Cosmetics in your beauty routine, you reduce your daily dose of potentially harmful products while helping to preserve the planet in a healthy, ethical, and sustainable way.
